On Sunday, President Donald Trump interviewed with CBS’s 60 Minutes. This was his first interview with the program in over five years, which occurred after a legal settlement between the former president and the network's parent company.
The interview covered many topics, including the ongoing government shutdown, foreign policies, and immigration. Other topics may have been discussed, but that is unclear, as CBS has noted the original interview was over 90 minutes long and heavily edited.
Trump begins the interview by talking about the government shutdown. The government has been shut down for 35 days now and has caused at least $7 billion in damage, according to experts. Trump places the blame fully on Democrats for the shutdown and urges them to cooperate to end it.
Next, Trump spoke on foreign policy and nuclear weapons. He defended the U.S. decision to test nuclear weapons. Stating that the United States isn’t the only country currently testing atomic weapons. He also briefly spoke on his meetings with China’s and Russia’s presidents, focusing on trade and denuclearization efforts.
Trump also very briefly spoke about U.S. military efforts in Venezuela, including striking alleged drug trafficking boats. He doubted a full war with Venezuela but mentioned Venezuela's president, Nicolás Maduro, whose “days may be numbered.”
Finally, Trump spoke on immigration, saying that ICE raids and immigration crackdowns “haven’t gone far enough.”
While it wasn’t a main topic, Trump also said many times during the interview that the 2020 election was rigged.
